About the village

Brixton Parish is the first parish in the South Hams on the A379 on the outskirts of Plymouth and is steeped in history. The landscape of the parish is mainly agricultural and the area to the south of the A379 is part of the South Devon National Landscape (formally known as Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) bordered by the River Yealm and Cofflete Creek. There are three main settlements in the parish – Brixton Village, Carrollsland and Sherford, along with the hamlets of Brixton Torr and Spriddlestone. Building of the new town of Sherford started in 2016, part of which falls within the parish boundary. This area will eventually become part of the new parish of Sherford.

Located within Brixton village there is a church, primary school, nursery school, pub, fish and chip shop, independent living accommodation at Venn Court, a residential/nursing home, allotments and a community centre. There is a proposal to move the current Post Office service into the Foxhound village pub, subject to consultation. Close to the village is Otter garden centre, Fordbrook nursery, a camp site, garage with car sales and a small industrial estate. At Carrollsland there is a garage/supermarket and Plymstock Albion Oaks Rugby Club.

St Mary’s church has recently formed a new team of bell-ringers, who practise every Tuesday. The community centre is used by a number of groups including short bowls, handicraft group, dance classes, yoga classes and a book club.

Our History

Brixton has a long history which can be traced back to the Domesday Book. The local economy was traditionally based on farming, together with other rural and commercial activities around the river Yealm.

The village of Brixton visibly reflects its history with its 14th Century Church and Priests’ Cottages, alongside the historic Feoffee Trust owned cottages and park.

The Laying Up of the Royal British Legion Standard Brixton Branch

Following the closure of the Brixton Branch of the Royal British Legion on Remembrance Day 2023, the Commemorative bench, presented to the village by the Branch in recognition of the long history of the RBL in Brixton since its foundation in 1927, was dedicated.

On 28th July the last Standard of the Brixton Branch was lovingly laid up in St Mary’s church where it will eventually be displayed as a lasting sign of the RBL’s presence and work in Brixton.
